Upcoming Educational Events - Save the Dates - Teleconferences - Regional Partner Updates
Upcoming Teleconferences and Educational Opportunities The following is information on upcoming educational events, satellite broadcasts/webcasts and training sessions scheduled for the month of September. These programs address different aspects of Emergency Preparedness and Response that may be of interest to you. For an in-depth summary and understanding of Bio-Terrorism, go to http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/etools/ics/index.html Another excellent online source for information concerning bio-terrorism and related training is http://www.bt.cdc.gov/ a link from the CDC website. A previously broadcast program entitled "The Historical Roots of Bioterrorism and Implications for the Future" sponsored through the Alabama Department of Public Health is now available on webcast at www.adph.org/apht.
A new publication is now available to Maine and it’s preparedness community, entitled Emergency Preparedness Monthly. This free monthly newsletter is designed to be a resource for a regional audience of public health, healthcare, public safety, and emergency response practitioners throughout Maine, as well as state and local leaders interested in protecting the public’s health. It includes a digest of select news stories and commentaries, links to relevant resources, and a listing of upcoming preparedness-related trainings and events. The goal of this publication is to provide a central forum for disseminating useful, current, and succinct preparedness information to busy professionals in Maine. Already, over 1000 public health preparedness personnel in Maine receive this publication. A simple email puts you on the list to receive this publication every month. Go to http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/hcphp/ep-monthly/ to view or to subscribe at the bottom of the newsletter.
Maine Health Alert Network
The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office of Public Health Emergency Preparedness is pleased to announce the roll-out of a new alerting engine for The Maine Health Alert Network (MaineHAN). The new alerting engine, called Response Manager (RM), will dramatically improve our communication during a public health emergency by providing bi-directional, peer-to-peer messaging among first responders and essential public health officials throughout the state (via telephone, email, fax, alphanumeric pagers, cell phones, and Blackberries), as well as the sharing of information on the web portal. On this web portal, you can view and confirm receipt of alert-related information, read news and announcements, and access links to other relevant web sites. Your user capabilities on the site will be determined by the license level you are assigned, either Alerting, Collaboration, or Administration. New users to RM will need to logon to the web portal to complete your contact information, set your alerting profile, and select a four-digit security code so you will be able to confirm receipt of the alert-related information via the telephone. Your initial account setup will take approximately 15-20 minutes. Maine CDC will make the transition to RM beginning on November 1, 2008. Existing partners who currently receive alert-related information via the state'sCyberdata blast fax and e-mail system will no longer receive this information thru these channels starting on November 1st, 2008. It is essential that you complete your user profile as soon as possible. Call the Resource Center for assistance or for additional information. If you already are signed up and have an account, click here to sign on and access the Response Manager. The HAN web link
EMResource The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Office of Public Health Emergency Preparedness, has decided to operationalize their web-based hospital asset tracking solution called EMResource. EMResource helps hospitals, health centers, and public health officials prepare for and respond to emergencies. The immediate focus is on the development and implementation of an influenza surveillance form that will provide day-to-day influenza activity in hospitals and health centers. The influenza surveillance data will then provide Maine CDC officials and others with a daily report of influenza activity at the local level. This daily report will help form and implement a more effective response by positioning personnel and resources to prevent sustained person-to-person transmission of the virus. The EMResource influenza surveillance form was designed to be simple yet effective. The data elements include: The number of ER visits for ILI; The number of ER ILI who were tested; The number admitted with ILI; The total number tested; The number of admissions to ICU with ILI; Influenza types (if known); And the number of associated deaths from ILI. The Regional Resource Centers, in tandem with the Maine Primary Care Association, will coordinate implementation of the influenza surveillance form among hospitals and health centers. Please contact your regional resource center for further information. The EMRsource link EM Resource

H1N1 Survey As many of you know, the Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention is in the process of conducting numerous in-person debriefings across the state with stakeholders on the H1N1 efforts. We hope you have had a chance to participate in these. However, we recognize some people are unable to attend these forums, and even if you have been able to, certain types of feedback are easier to provide by responding to a survey. Therefore, we are providing the link below to a Survey Monkey as a mechanism to provide us confidential feedback on the H1N1 efforts. We encourage you to participate in this survey, which should take no longer than 15 - 30 minutes. Additionally, we ask that you forward it to other stakeholders. We are eager to have as many people as possible fill it out so we can obtain as broad feedback as possible.
